But whether or not that is true, is, as noted in the <em>New York Times<\/em>, \u201ca debate at least as old as the Reformation, when Martin Luther broke with the Catholic Church and insisted that reason was so corrupted that faith in the divine was humanity\u2019s only hope of salvation. . . .\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a serious issue, and if I am wrong, this is where I am wrong,\u201d George acknowledges. Read it<a href=\"http:\/\/www.virtueonline.org\/portal\/modules\/news\/article.php?storyid=11776\" target=\"_blank\"> here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The above quote is found at the very end of the article. George is a Princeton  University professor of modern law, a Roman Catholic, and a leading conservative Christian thinker.<\/p>\n<p>Luther affirmed that reason is a tool to sort out life, but it\u2019s not an absolute, not without sin, and not a source of revelation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">*\u00a0 *\u00a0 *<\/p>\n<p>Is there something anti-intellectual at the heart of seeker-sensitive evangelical churches? Mark Noll, in <em>The Scandal of the Evangelical Mind<\/em> (1994), concluded that the \u201cscandal\u201d is that there isn\u2019t much of an evangelical mind because evangelicalism is feeling-based.<\/p>\n<p>Jonathan Fitzgerald argues in <a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB20001424052748704597704574487532250568304.html\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cThe New Evangelical Scandal\u201d<\/a> that the same-old scandal continues.<\/p>\n<p>Luther opposed experience-based religiosity. Faith is a gift, pure and simple. Our salvation does not depend on \u201cwhat we are, think, say, or do\u201d (Smalcald Articles 111\/111, 36; Book of Concord [Tappert] 309).
