{"id":1656,"date":"2012-03-10T13:19:48","date_gmt":"2012-03-10T20:19:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/crossalone.us\/?p=1656"},"modified":"2012-03-11T13:24:33","modified_gmt":"2012-03-11T20:24:33","slug":"the-lutheran-no-easter-gospel-for-children","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/crossalone.us\/?p=1656","title":{"rendered":"The Lutheran: No Easter Gospel for Children"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1><em> <\/em><\/h1>\n<p>What to say to children facing the death of a loved one?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Death is \u201cas natural as birth and life,\u201d <\/strong>writes Diana Dworin,<a href=\"#_ftn1\">[1]<\/a> quoting Theresa Huntley,<a href=\"#_ftn2\">[2]<\/a> who also suggests parents seize \u201cteachable moments,\u201d like obituary notices or backyard burials of pets, as ways to \u201chelp even a young child learn about the process of grieving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When their dog died, Dworin told her kids: \u201cGod\u2019s connection to us never changes\u2014whether we live or die, or whether we\u2019re people or poodles.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn3\">[3]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Whatever happened to the Easter gospel, that Jesus Christ died and rose again to give us life forever in Him? <strong>Is the Easter gospel too threatening for kids? <\/strong>Nothing, in the materials Dworin presents, ever mentions the Easter gospel.<a href=\"#_ftn4\">[4]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Something\u2019s seriously wrong.<a href=\"#_ftn5\">[5]<\/a><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"dot_clear.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"80\" \/><\/p>\n<hr size=\"1\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"dot_clear.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"8\" \/><br \/>\n<a href=\"#_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a> \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thelutheran.org\/article\/article.cfm?article_id=10553\" target=\"_blank\">Dealing with death<\/a>. Framing it as a natural part of life helps children grieve,\u201d <em>The Lutheran, <\/em>March 2012, p.41. It\u2019s O.K. to tell children about the manger but not the cross and resurrection?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#_ftnref2\">[2]<\/a> Theresa Huntley, <em>Helping Children Grieve: When Someone They Love Dies<\/em> (Augsburg Fortress 2002).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#_ftnref3\">[3]<\/a> \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thelutheran.org\/blog\/index.cfm?person_id=491&amp;blog_id=1151\" target=\"_blank\">Our family\u2019s first loss<\/a>,\u201d <em>The Lutheran<\/em>, March  6, 2009. See also \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thelutheran.org\/article\/article.cfm?article_id=8899\" target=\"_blank\">Talking to children about disasters<\/a>.\u201d <em>The Lutheran<\/em>, March 2010.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#_ftnref4\">[4]<\/a> Dworin also <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thelutheran.org\/article\/article.cfm?article_id=10554\" target=\"_blank\">gives<\/a>a quarter of her page in the Lutheran to <em>The Fall of Freddie The Leaf<\/em> (Buscaglia)! There is a place for psychology, to be sure, but how can a Christian omit the Easter gospel when dealing with death, even with children?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#_ftnref5\">[5]<\/a> Perhaps Dworin\u2019s regular column in <em>The Lutheran<\/em>, titled \u201cPass the faith,\u201d should be titled \u201cPass over the faith.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What to say to children facing the death of a loved one?
