Preach the text? Or the gospel?<\/p>\n<p>Even Gerhard Forde said preaching is \u201cdoing the text\u201d to believers.<a href=\"#_ftn1\">[1]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>But doesn\u2019t that work better with some texts more than others?<\/p>\n<p>For example, when the lectionary has those \u201ctake up your cross\u201d texts which presuppose that we can and must do something to make salvation work: \u201cHe who does not take up his cross and follow me is not worthy of me\u201d (Matt 10:38).<a href=\"#_ftn2\">[2]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>What do you do with a text like that?<\/p>\n<p>What did Forde do?<\/p>\n<p>In this sermon, <a href=\"https:\/\/crossalone.us\/2006\/fordeondying.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"><em>On Death to Self<\/em><\/a>, Forde preaches the gospel <strong>even though<\/strong> he is preaching about \u201cdying to self,\u201d and \u201ctaking up your cross.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr size=\"1\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"dot_clear.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"8\" \/><br \/>\n<a href=\"#_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a> Gerhard Forde, <em>Theology is for Proclamation <\/em>(Minneapolis; Augsburg Fortress, 1990) 155-158.
