{"id":1362,"date":"2011-01-23T15:55:31","date_gmt":"2011-01-23T22:55:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/crossalone.us\/?page_id=1362"},"modified":"2011-01-24T13:43:50","modified_gmt":"2011-01-24T20:43:50","slug":"ccm-10-years-out-elca-hooked-but-not-landed-3","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/crossalone.us\/?page_id=1362","title":{"rendered":"CCM 10 years out: ELCA hooked but not landed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Page 3<\/b><br \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"dot_clear.gif\" width=\"1\" height=\"6\"><\/p>\n<div align=\"center\">\n<h4><strong>Ten years out, what\u2019s happening?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Lutheran bishops still aren\u2019t kosher enough. <\/strong> CCM required the ELCA to add elements of ordination to the rite for installation<a href=\"#_ftn8\">[8]<\/a> of a bishop to make the rite equivalent to <strong>an Episcopal ordination<\/strong> into the office of bishop.<a href=\"#_ftn9\">[9]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Since 2001 all newly-elected ELCA bishops have been so ordained. Nevertheless, as far as is known, no ELCA bishop has participated in the laying-on-of-hands of an Episcopal bishop until June 2010.<a href=\"#_ftn10\">[10]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>It doesn\u2019t count for ELCA bishops to participate in an Episcopal ordination by reading, raising their hands, signing a book, and the like.<a href=\"#_ftn11\">[11]<\/a> The only thing that counts is the laying-on-of-hands. It has to be the chain of hands, the <strong>pipeline<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"dot_clear.gif\" width=\"1\" height=\"6\"><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#_ftnref8\">[8]<\/a> The ELCA \u201c<strong>amended the rite<\/strong> for \u2018Installation of a Bishop\u2019 to include a prayer for the gift of the Holy Spirit and the laying-one-of-hands by three bishops already installed in the historic episcopate,\u201d from the official <em>Commentary on \u201cCalled to Common <\/em><em>Mission<\/em><em>,\u201d<\/em> p. 20 regarding CCM \u00b618 (emphasis added).<\/p>\n<p>See also the commentary on CCM \u00b612 (p.16) which states that the required added elements of prayer for the Holy Spirit and the laying-on-of-hands are \u201cthe traditional means by which the historic succession of bishops has been observed from the time of the early church.\u201d The official <em>Commentary<\/em> was adopted by the Lutheran-Episcopal Coordinating Committee, February 5, 2002.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#_ftnref9\">[9]<\/a> The ELCA employs a verbal trick by keeping the term \u201cinstallation\u201d but adding the traditional <strong>elements of ordination<\/strong> and making the rite <strong>non-repeatable<\/strong> like an ordination, not an installation, which is a repeated rite. Many Lutherans were misled by this verbal trick, as the exchange between Huffman and Epting below shows:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThose Lutherans whom Huffman perceives \u2018were not told the whole truth about the implications of CCM\u2019 apparently did not bother to read material produced by the ecumenical office of their church or the document itself, which make clear that <strong>traditional elements of ordination<\/strong> (i.e. the laying on of hands and invocation of the Holy Spirit for the office and work of a bishop) are indeed employed,\u201dThe Rt.
