{"id":1357,"date":"2011-01-23T15:43:53","date_gmt":"2011-01-23T22:43:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/crossalone.us\/?page_id=1357"},"modified":"2011-01-23T20:22:16","modified_gmt":"2011-01-24T03:22:16","slug":"ccm-10-years-out-elca-hooked-but-not-landed-page-2","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/crossalone.us\/?page_id=1357","title":{"rendered":"CCM 10 years out: ELCA hooked but not landed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Page 2<\/b><br \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"dot_clear.gif\" width=\"1\" height=\"6\"><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The August 1999 Churchwide Assembly adopted CCM with the  understanding that the Tucson Resolution was part of the text and a  revision accepted by both churches, but after the Assembly ELCA  Secretary Lowell Almen <strong>overrode<\/strong> the Assembly, as The Episcopal Church reports:<strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe Tucson resolution was <strong>not voted on<\/strong> by the Churchwide Assembly and thus the <strong>national secretary of the ELCA<\/strong> [Lowell Almen] has clarified that it is <strong>not part<\/strong> of the amendment to paragraph three of CCM and that the EC is <strong>not being asked to vote on it.\u201d<\/strong><a href=\"#_ftn5\">[5]<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The ELCA bishops <strong>thought<\/strong> they were really doing something! But Lowell Almen sold them out. Gone was gospel-freedom to be flexible about structure.<a href=\"#_ftn6\">[6]<\/a> The Episcopal sacramental episcopate was now a <strong>constitutional requirement.<\/strong> The ELCA has been hooked and hoodwinked.<a href=\"#_ftn7\">[7]<\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"dot_clear.gif\" width=\"1\" height=\"6\"><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#_ftnref5\">[5]<\/a> &#8220;Questions Addressed on CCM,&#8221; p. 20. Something which is a matter of freedom is being imposed as a necessity. What ministers have to witness to is precisely the freedom of the gospel\u201d (<em>A Response to the Concordat of Agreement<\/em>, pp.1-2). Read it <a href=\"https:\/\/crossalone.us\/2006\/fordeonccm.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#_ftnref7\">[7]<\/a> The Episcopal House of Bishops adopted the Mind of the House Resolution (April 2000), which states that Episcopalians accept current ELCA ministries because of \u201cthe voted intention of that church to enter the ministry of the historic episcopate (CCM para. 18). According to <strong>catholic tradition<\/strong> of which The Episcopal Church is a part, the order of <strong>the historic episcopate properly includes within itself all three of these orders<\/strong>\u201d (emphasis added). Read it <a href=\"https:\/\/crossalone.us\/2006\/fordeonccm.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Episcopal Church understands that CCM binds the ELCA to adopt the threefold ministry: \u201c[H]aving agreed that the threefold ministry of Bishops, Presbyters, and Deacons in historic succession will be <strong>the future pattern of the one ordained ministry shared corporately within the two churches<\/strong> in full communion\u2026\u201d (emphasis added). Read it <a href=\"https:\/\/crossalone.us\/2006\/relatingtoccm.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>After CCM was adopted the ELCA produced two unofficial documents: <em>Questions and Answers on \u2018Called to Common <\/em><em>Mission<\/em><em>\u2019\u201d<\/em> (2000), and <em>Frequently Asked Questions About \u2018Called to Common <\/em><em>Mission<\/em><em>\u2019\u201d<\/em> (2001) which are such massive distortions that it would take pages to identify their errors. Two examples:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>1.   Does CCM expect the ELCA to adopt the threefold pattern of ministry?<\/p>\n<p>ELCA: \u201cIt is not true that the ELCA has accepted a three-tiered system of ministry. In \u201cCalled to Common Mission,\u201d paragraphs 14 and 15 clearly affirm the ELCA\u2019s continuing pattern of ordained ministry\u201d (<em>Frequently Asked Questions about CCM<\/em>; The quote is from the 8<sup>th<\/sup> question, although the questions are not numbered. Read it <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elca.org\/Who-We-Are\/Our-Three-Expressions\/Churchwide-Organization\/Ecumenical-and-Inter-Religious-Relations\/Full-Communion-Partners\/The-Episcopal-Church\/FAQ-Called-to-Common-Mission.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>EC: \u201c[H]aving agreed that the threefold ministry of Bishops, Presbyters, and Deacons in historic succession will be the future pattern of the <strong>one ordained ministry shared corporately within the two churches<\/strong> in full communion\u2026\u201d (Episcopal Resolution AO41 to adopt CCM (emphasis added). What is the historic episcopate required by CCM?<\/p>\n<p>ELCA: \u201cThe historic episcopate is the orderly transmission of the office of bishop or overseer, with its roots in the time of the early church\u201d (<em>Questions and Answers on Called to Common <\/em><em>Mission<\/em><em>; <\/em>the 15<sup>th<\/sup> question. Read it <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.elca.org\/ecumenical\/resources\/since_you_asked.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>EC: \u201cThe Episcopal Church\u2019s recognition of the full authenticity of the ministers ordained in the ELCA or its predecessor bodies (CCM para 15) is made in view of the voted intention of that church to enter the ministry of the historic episcopate (para 18). According to catholic tradition of which The Episcopal Church is a part, the order of the historic episcopate properly includes within itself all three of these orders [Bishop, Presbyters, and Deacons]\u201d (Episcopal Bishops\u2019 <em>Mind of the House Resolution<\/em>, #3; Read it <a href=\"https:\/\/crossalone.us\/2006\/mindofthehouse.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The final resolution of what happens between Lutherans and Episcopalians <strong>is governed by<\/strong> <strong>the Anglican commitment<\/strong> to Roman Catholic Holy Orders.
